The PlatfoRms

Kyoto University School of Platforms

Creating and implementing a new methodology of efficiently analyzing information from the real world and feeding it back into social spaces, encompassing original character and social values in Japan, a ʻplatform,ʼ is the key to solving various problems in modern society. Building such Platforms requires persons who can share their expertise in their fields, information technology, knowledge of liberal arts, etc. People having such competence are nowadays widely demanded by society.

Kyoto University has opened a new PhD program of ʻKyoto University School of Platformsʼ in collaboration with the Graduate School of Informatics/Agriculture/Medicine, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, and School of Government. In this program, students can achieve multiple majors with advanced and ingenious research skills from fundamental to applied technologies through cooperation between informatics (information and communication technology), field science (agriculture, medicine, disaster prevention, etc., with increased values through information and data), and liberal arts (laws, ethic, etc.), thus enabling them to become leading platform builders.

Building such Platforms requires persons who can share their expertise in their fields, information technology, knowledge of liberal arts, etc. People having such competence are nowadays widely demanded by society. In the PhD program of ʻKyoto University School of Platforms,ʼ we aim to cultivate a person who can build a platform that could become a global standard in the future by thoroughly investigating an original standard in Japan with their own philosophy. Please note initiative of this program aiming to make informatics a liberal art with teachers inside/outside Kyoto University and companies and other experts.
