Optimal Transport Problem for Optimization of Product Transport from Supply Points to Demand Points at Stipulated Costs

Proposed Platform

Digital platform to advance problem-solving based on mathematical forecasts. The goal is to raise logistical efficiency for swift and optimal decision-making in the transport field.

Research Focus

The optimal transport problem is a method for minimizing stipulated cost functions, with the purpose of identifying optimum methods for transport of certain resources to different locations. The disciplines that apply the optimal transport theory include not only economics, engineering, and mathematical sciences, but also machine learning.

From the perspective of information science, research aimed at optimizing data flow and storage management is conducted using the optimal transport theory. In terms of economics, there are cases where the optimal transport problem is applied from the perspective of market efficiency and cost reduction. In the field of machine learning, the optimal transport theory is used in coordinating the distribution of data within the learning process with the targeted distribution. As a case in point, Wasserstein generative adversarial networks (GANs) utilize cost functions based on the optimal transport theory, leading to image generation with greater reality.

Research Focus

Increasing the number of adequately managed forests has a variety of benefits for the environment. By using the opportunity to conduct a survey on willingness to participate in a new scheme aimed to promote proper forest management, the "Forest Management System," this research will employ an RCT to test which interventions will increase the number of forest owners who show a willingness to participate. While applying the findings of my intended minor in Forest Ecology, I will increase the number of variables to allow for more flexibility in the model.

Elucidating the Flexible Use of Rivers by Japanese Eels in Response to Water Temperature

Proposed Platform

I would like to build a platform that will lead to both conservation of the natural environment and convenience for people.

Research Focus

I am studying the regional ecological differences of Japanese eels. I have caught and studied Japanese eels in two rivers, one in Wakayama Prefecture and the other in Fukushima Prefecture. While many eels were caught even during winter in Wakayama Prefecture, which is relatively warm throughout the year, in Fukushima Prefecture, where winters are frigid, no eels could be caught at all in winter. Based on this experience, it occurred to me that in areas at high latitudes where winter is severe, eels may utilize estuaries and oceans with relatively high water temperatures during the winter period. Therefore, using information and communication devices such as PIT tags (tags for tracking individual organisms), their receivers, and positioning devices, I have been tracking the behavior of these species at an individual level in the two rivers. This research will hopefully contribute to effectively conserving this declining species in a way appropriate to its habitat.

Quantitative evaluation of biotic and physical factors on the daily variation of stomatal conductance of plant leaves in open fields

Proposed Platform

I would like to build a platform that can follow the photosynthetic rate of crops and trees throughout Japan and worldwide.

Research Focus

Photosynthesis requires the absorption of carbon dioxide through the stomata; however, the humidity in leaves is generally 100%, and during the day, when the temperature is high, a large amount of water vapor escapes through the stomata. Consequently, plants exhibit a tendency to close their stomata during the day, which significantly restricts photosynthesis, thereby affecting crop growth and forest carbon sequestration. While the degree of diurnal stomatal closure is known to vary greatly depending on soil moisture content and plant survival strategies, as well as weather conditions, the extent to which each affects stomatal behavior remains unknown. To this end, I am currently growing juvenile trees of various species in a common field and measuring diurnal variation of stomatal conductance under controlled soil moisture conditions to examine its relationship with environmental conditions and the variation among species, individual organisms, and individual leaves. At present, this research is being conducted as a basic study of plant physiological ecology to understand plants' survival and coexistence strategies. On the other hand, I would like to collect a wide range of data from throughout Japan and worldwide to analyze diurnal variation in stomatal and photosynthetic behavior and to link this to future climate change prediction over an extended time frame and to the field of agriculture and forestry. For this purpose, I believe that knowledge of platform studies, including informatics, will be necessary, which led to my participation in this project.

My research focuses on the relationship between the thickness of plant leaves and alterations in water use traits.

Proposed Platform

I would like to build a platform that can provide open and easy-to-use plant trait data that is not only useful for my research but can also be used by a wide variety of people.

Research Focus

Plant leaves retain their structure and tautness by turgor pressure, a force that expands the cells with water. When a leaf dries, the turgor pressure decreases, and the leaf wilts.
Accordingly, leaf cells and tissues also shrink as they lose water, and the overall thickness of the leaf also decreases.

However, it is often unclear how the structural deformation of thickness contraction is related to the turgor pressure and the accompanying changes in leaf physiological parameters (water-use traits).
By clarifying these relationships and the differences among species, I aim to reveal the differences in plant responsiveness to desiccation and their significance.

Study on Soybean Cropping and Farm Sustainability in Bangladesh's Tropical Delta

Fostering appropriate farm management through the open study of climatically and environmentally suitable crop varieties, with consideration for environmental risk

Research Focus

With the growth in global demand for cooking oil, the farmland area in soybean cultivation has expanded year on year even in Bangladesh, a country with a tropical monsoon climate. Winter cropping of soybean on drained paddy fields has caught on, and farmers living in the country's coastal delta zone prefer growing it. In fact, over 90 percent of the country's domestic soybean crop is grown in the coastal delta. The coastal delta encompasses broad tracts of land known as chars, riverine sand and silt landmasses formed by sediments carried down from the Himalayas. These char lands are relatively recent land forms and valuable land resources that have been exploited by low-income and impoverished households. The government and NGOs alike have actively promoted the expansion of soybean cropping in these areas as an effective approach from the standpoint of climate-smart agriculture. In our research, we will pursue a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the hidden potential of char land soybean cropping in terms of farm management, including improvements in farming household income and climate adaptability.

To achieve sustainable farm management, an understanding of the natural environment and regional society is essential. I want to research sustainable agricultural systems from a platform perspective that integrates knowledge and information from diverse fields.

The Joint Creation of Rural Communities by Local Residents and Outside Human Resources Through Adoption of the DAO Approach

Research Focus

The aging and depopulation of Japan's rural society has brought many villages to the brink of collapse. These villages are no longer able to maintain their functions alone and thus need assistance through initiatives in community development supported by neighboring stakeholders.

Although several solutions to rural community issues exist, I perceive potential in the decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) concept. Access to the internet and social media has improved life for citizens living in rural communities. However, because ties between village stakeholders tend to be weak, efforts in community development that reflect a diversity of views can face difficulty. As a solution, implementing the DAO approach would establish links between stakeholders through the online space and grant voting rights through the issuance of tokens, thus facilitating a community decision-making process that also reflects the views of stakeholders who previously did not enjoy adequate representation.

Looking forward, I plan to apply my knowledge of informatics to introduce the DAO approach in a village in Mie Prefecture and analyze the communication within the village using knowledge of informatics. Moreover, drawing on experience within Japan, I will be interested in promoting adoption of the DAO approach by rural communities that also face ongoing aging and depopulation abroad.

Comparative Analysis of Wild Medaka (Oryzias Latipes) Populations to Understand the Mechanisms that Determine the Vertebral Number in Fish

Proposed Platform

I would like to build a platform to identify the relationship between the genomes and phenotypes of various fish species. Applications in the fields of aquatic genetic breeding, disease resistance, pharmaceutical drug development, etc.

Research Focus

While it is known that the number of vertebrae constituting the spine of fish is lower in tropical regions than in colder regions, the genetic factors involved in determining the number of vertebrae have not yet been identified in fish. Therefore, the mechanism of molecular evolution brought about by water temperature in their habitats is also unknown. Accordingly, in this study, CT imaging using a micro-CT system was first performed on wild medaka strains in various regions of Japan to count the number of vertebrae. The vertebra count data will be combined with the genome data of each strain to conduct a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) to narrow down the genetic regions related to the vertebra count. Meanwhile, linkage analysis will also be conducted using two strains of wild medaka with significant difference in vertebral counts, and the results will be reviewed against the GWAS results to narrow down the genetic regions effectively. Furthermore, in addition to the number of vertebrae, various traits related to external morphology will be extracted from the CT data, aiming to build a platform for efficient genetic statistical research to clarify the genetic background of genomic traits.

Eliminating Nuisances through Robots Instilled with Humor

Proposed Platform

A platform capable of harnessing robots to excel in various different situations.

Research Focus

Issues encountered during robot operation include children interfering with the work performed by robots and people refusing to follow instructions from robots. The difficulties in mounting effective responses to such “nuisances” threaten to become a major factor impeding the social advancement of robots. As a means of resolving this problem, I am proposing humor. In our daily lives, people make effective and extensive use of humor as a means of persuasion. Likely coming to mind are examples like that of mothers chiding their children, saying “Santa won’t come if you behave badly!” My belief is that robots can be made more useful by equipping them with such communication skills.

I am confident that this type of humor can prove effective in various different industries and situations. It seems quite plausible that, as depicted in Japan’s Society 5.0 vision, robots will act as members of society in the capacity of proxies and supports for the work and coordination performed by human beings in agriculture, disaster prevention, medicine, nursing care, and many other fields. As robots emerge to excel in various different areas, it will also be important to discover both their respective differences and points shared in common in terms of such useful humor. My desire is to contribute to society by building a platform capable of bringing this vision to fruition.

The Automation of Farm Machinery

A platform for agricultural robots
Build a platform to alleviate inadequate skill sets among new farmers while easing the burden on existing farmers

Research Focus

In Japan's farm sector, the increasingly serious decline and aging of the farmer population have given rise to fears of an impending labor shortage. Attention has focused on the automation of farm machinery as a measure to counter these trends. Currently, most farm machinery manufacturers offer a variety of autonomous farm machines, including rice planters, tractors, and combines.

However, the use of these autonomous machines is limited to in-field operations and has not yet contributed to reductions in manpower, as off-field operations such as driving on farm roads or moving the equipment in and out of storage sheds or garages are tasks still handled by humans. Resolving these issues will require the development of safer autonomous driving technologies for the farm setting. In contrast to urban environments, the farm setting includes a complex mixture of natural obstacles and stretches of unpaved roads; autonomous driving systems for the farm setting thus require extra attention to safety.

If off-field machinery operations are automated, it will be possible to automate all farm operations in a more comprehensive way. I am interested in developing a farm automation platform for exactly that scenario.

Helping Agricultural Irrigation Facilities Survive Disasters of Unexpected Severity Using an Innovative Method of Numerical Analysis Tied to Space-Time

Proposed Platform

A simple platform capable of comprehensive simulations for application in the disaster prevention field

Research Focus

To implement adequate steps in disaster prevention and mitigation that enable agricultural irrigation facilities to withstand intense earthquakes or downpours that are becoming increasingly more severe, countermeasures that incorporate considerations for unexpected events are vital. In this context, unexpected events include those considered unlikely to occur from a facility design standpoint, such as dam overflows or collapses. Devising adequate measures against such unexpected events requires a comprehensive and detailed understanding of multiple disaster processes that occur sequentially or in parallel. However, technologies to comprehensively handle multiple phenomena have not yet reached an adequate level of sophistication. In our research, we are striving to develop a novel physical-numerical model based on a space-time finite element method that can flexibly handle physical spaces and interactions that deform and change with time to predict, with good precision, a broad range of phenomena associated with agricultural irrigation facilities. Further, through coordination with data science, we will attempt to develop a platform capable of incorporating existing numerical simulation methods (prediction models) centered on the space-time finite element method.

Evolution of Selfish Behavior and its Consequences in a Cooperative Society of Social Insects

Proposed Platform

In the study of ecology, the "number" and "quantity" of organisms have long been the subject of interest, and theoretical and empirical studies have been conducted. However, there are many species whose populations are challenging to grasp efficiently, such as termites, which are my current research subject. In particular, since it is necessary to measure colonies and individual organisms without damaging their condition when conducting experiments, I am engaged in developing a method for estimating population size in a non-invasive approach. In addition, I am also working to develop a system that can improve the efficiency of breeding management for the adoption of insects as a source of feed.

Research Focus

Social insects build an efficient social system through cooperative behavior. Yet, within that system, "selfish" behavior is also observed, in which the insect pursues its own interests at the expense of overall efficiency, and I am investigating how such behavior influences the social system under natural selection. This balance between cooperation and conflict is a phenomenon that is universally observed in various settings, including human society, and the consequences that arise from this balance may have profound implications for a wide range of academic fields. My research methods range from empirical investigations and experiments based on fieldwork in mountain forests to computer simulations, particularly in the latter case; I feel that the knowledge acquired in platform studies, including methods used in other fields, will be of great use. Furthermore, as part of my empirical experiments, I have been developing a data collection method for experiments using insects and associated software, which I believe will enable the development of a new platform by broadening the scope of the application.

Development of a Nondestructive Method of Sex Determination for Chicken Eggs

Proposed Platform

My research focuses on the development of a technology to determine the sex of chicks in the early stages of egg incubation. By promoting the adoption of this technology at egg hatcheries, I hope to help eliminate the practice of male chick culling. At the same time, I aim to build a platform to monitor and optimize hatchery energy consumption, thus helping hatcheries to reduce their operating costs and save energy.

Research Focus

Every year, over 7 billion male chicks of egg-laying chicken breeds are culled worldwide because they cannot be utilized for the production of chicken eggs or meat. This has become a problem particularly in many European countries, where it is viewed as contrary to the principles of animal welfare; some countries have even passed laws banning the practice. Culling male chicks would not be necessary and the above problem could be resolved if the sex of chick embryos could be determined before they hatch and especially before the onset of nociception. Thus, a technology for the nondestructive determination of embryo sex is needed.

In my research, I am engaged in R&D of a chick embryo sex determination technology that uses laser beams. Applying this laser technology for blood flow imaging to chicken eggs can yield information on embryonic angiogenesis, in addition to blood flow. Based on this information, embryo sex can then be determined through machine learning methods. My hope is that in the future, hatcheries will adopt this technology and utilize it for chicken egg monitoring and sex determination.

Research on Super-Large-Coverage Private Mobile Communications System

Proposed Platform

I am pursuing research with the goal of building a platform for cyber-physical systems (CPSs) that is capable of use in agriculture, disaster prevention, and various other fields. CPSs refer to systems in which measurement data and other types of information in cyberspace are gathered from real space through fixed and wireless networks, analyzed in servers, then fed back to and utilized in real space. In my research, the objective is to build a private communications system covering wider areas than those in normal wireless communications, targeting ready introduction in fields in which it has proved difficult to realize and promote CPSs to date.

Research Focus

I am engaged in research and development of a super-large-coverage private communications system engineered for utilization in a wide range of platforms in the CPS era.

As the CPS era emerges, it is hypothesized that measurement data and other types of information in cyberspace will be gathered from real space through fixed and wireless networks, analyzed in servers, then fed back to and utilized in real space. In my research, I am not focusing on any specific use. Rather, the goal is to build a system facilitating use by most anyone in agriculture, disaster prevention, and numerous other fields.

As examples of such applications, I envision private wireless communications designed for smart meters and agricultural machinery in mountainous areas, vast farms, and other zones not covered by cellular and other general public (as opposed to private) networks; as well as for use as temporary wireless links upon interruption of public communications at disaster sites. Because such uses are included in my hypothesis, it will be important to realize a super-large-coverage service with a single system. To achieve super-large coverage, I am engaged in two specific areas of research and development. The first is the quest to define methods of maintaining communications speed while extending the communications range between a base station and a mobile station. The second is R&D to further extend the communications range of the overall system, using relay stations that allow for a multi-hop configuration between a base station and a mobile station.

Realizing In-Band Full-Duplex Communications in Fifth-Generation Mobile Communications Systems

Proposed Platform

My goal is to introduce in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communications in mobile communications systems that serve as a platform for applications in agriculture, medicine, disaster prevention, and various other fields, in order to further expand capacity and reduce latency.

Research Focus

Mobile communications comprise a foundation utilized in various types of platforms, with recent years witnessing explosive growth in traffic hand in hand with the growth of the Internet of Things and other technologies. This trend has sparked interest in IBFD communications, in which uplink and downlink transmissions occur simultaneously on the same frequency, as a method for improving frequency use efficiency geared to next-generation mobile communications systems. I am pursuing research with the goal of realizing IBFD communications in the fifth-generation mobile communications (5G) systems. Compared to existing half-duplex communications systems that assign different time-frequency resources to uplink and downlink transmissions, this approach offers the potential to theoretically improve frequency use efficiency up to twofold. However, the application of IBFD involves the issue of newly generated self-interference (SI) at base stations, as well as inter-user interference (IUI) referring to interference between user terminals. To rise to these challenges, I have proposed interference cancellers rooted in considerations for the composition, encoding, and other characteristics of 5G signals, while advancing assessments through actual machine development.

Elucidating the Role of Sea Turtle Eggs as a Food Resource in the Sandy Beach Food Chain

Proposed Platform

Various ecosystems exist in the natural world, and I hope to build a platform that integrates the connections between these ecosystems.

Research Focus

It is known that marine-derived organic matter such as seaweed and fish carcasses support the foundation of the food chain on sandy beaches, where large plants are less likely to grow naturally, and primary production is low. Besides flotsam, sea turtle spawning is considered a factor that moves organic matter from the ocean to the sandy beaches. It is known that sea turtle eggs are preyed upon by organisms belonging to various taxonomic groups that inhabit the sandy beaches. Accordingly, although it is a pulsed resource supplied during a limited period, sea turtle eggs similar to flotsam are probable organic matter supporting the sandy beach's food chain. Yet, no research has been conducted on the effects of sea turtle eggs compared to seaweed and flotsam on the food chain of sandy beaches. Therefore, by focusing on the Ocypode spp., predators of sea turtle eggs in spawning areas around the world, this study aims to verify the role of sea turtle eggs in the food chain of sandy beaches by estimating the contribution rate of sea turtle eggs to the diet of Ocypode spp., using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios.

Development of an Inverse Analysis Method Based on Bayesian Inference

Proposed Platform

Although still a vague idea, I want to compile a library on an inverse analysis method I plan to develop.

Research Focus

My research has to do with inverse problems and inverse analysis. An inverse problem is a process that involves utilizing observational data (results) of a given phenomenon to infer the unknown parameters (causal factors) that produce or control that phenomenon. Methods to solve inverse problems (inverse analysis) are applied to technologies to nondestructively visualize the internal features of an object; X-ray and CT imaging are classical examples of such technologies. In the agricultural and civil engineering fields, geophysical surveys utilize elastic waves and electromagnetic waves and, as technologies that visualize the interior features of natural geological formations and built structures, they are indispensable tools for structural maintenance and soil and geological surveys. However, in geophysical surveys, the observation points are limited to regions near the surface of the ground or structure, and unlike X-rays or CT scans, the inferred results are characterized by uncertainty and cannot be used to evaluate size. To enable the quantification of this uncertainty, I am developing an inverse analysis method based on Bayesian inference. I believe this method holds promise for applications not only in geophysical surveys, but also in other fields that require nondestructive estimates of internal characteristics.

Development of a Simulation Format Platform to Foster Disaster Response Governance

Proposed Platform

As the scale of disasters continues to expand, changes are also demanded in the roles and awareness of stakeholders in mounting responses to disasters, with particularly keen needs for countermeasures rooted in the perspective of overall disaster responses. To address this situation, I have built a platform implemented through simulation of the roles of various disaster responses, effectively structured to function as a system for the purpose of supporting problem-solving in disaster responses surrounding flood relief activities.

Research Focus

Concerns are emerging with regard to the increasing severity of wind and flood damage caused by the impact of climate change, underscoring the issue of the limits of relief efforts for large numbers of potential victims. Residents likely to be targets for such relief also cannot afford to ignore this issue, rendering it necessary for them to act on their own in reviewing evacuation and action plans. Along with this, appropriate relief strategies must be formulated to reflect the evacuation status of such residents. In this research, I have postulated a number of disaster response phases, in proposing approaches applicable in studies of countermeasures to deal with the expanding status of flooding and inundation. The greatest fruits of this research lie in building a platform implemented through simulation of the roles of various disaster responses, effectively structured to function as a system for the purpose of supporting problem-solving in disaster responses surrounding flood relief activities. Toward this end, I have prepared simulation environments and various types of models targeting actual existing urban areas in advance, followed by use of the platform to conduct studies into countermeasures for the looming issue of the limits of relief activities.

Realization of Virtual Processors for High-Speed and Verifiable Secure Computing through Multiparty Homomorphic Encryption

Proposed Platform

Recent years have seen increased attention in secure computing that enables use of personal and other confidential information without placing trust in operators. With such secure computing, all calculations are performed while data remains encrypted or otherwise concealed. The platform I am currently working to build is centered on secure computing, particularly geared to utilization in cloud computing and other applications that involve consignment of calculation processing to outside parties. The current format of cloud computing demands placing trust in cloud vendors. If desired by the cloud vendor, theoretically, all data on the cloud servers will be leaked. Use of secure computing enables such risk to be eliminated. However, there are certain major hurdles in the utilization of secure computing as a platform; for example, heavy computing and communications costs, and hitches in expressing issues in formats capable of being handled through secure computing. My objective is to overcome these challenges through the integration of technologies across multiple fields.

Research Focus

Secure computing is the generic term referring to the method of computing data in its encrypted state. This enables secure execution of computations using medical information and other personal data, trade secrets like fishing ground locations, and other sensitive intelligence free of the need for mutual trust between the parties involved. Such technology promises to emerge as a platform that supports diversified applications handling confidential information, the primary examples of which are learning and inference in artificial intelligence and outside consignments of calculation processing.

Homomorphic encryption is cryptography that enables computations of encryptions free of any alterations. One advantage of homomorphic encryption is that there are few assumptions of security. When treating secure computing as a platform, security is the first priority, with homomorphic encryption offering promise in that sense of the word. There are also issues with homomorphic encryption, however, such as the large volumes of calculations and limits on the computations that may be performed. Moreover, with applications in which multiple organizations supply information, there is the necessity to verify that calculations are not being conducted for purposes other than those originally intended.

In this research, my goal is to render it easier to realize applications by combining multiparty homomorphic encryption and the verification of calculations and by emulating general processers at high speed while being encrypted through dedicated hardware support and other means.

Type-Theoretic Foundation for Secure and Powerful Procedural Macros

Proposed Platform

Mobilizing meta programming for alignment with secure databases. My aim is to incorporate language specifications currently demanded into my approach.

Research Focus

The term “macro” refers to the function of empowering users to extend the syntax of programming languages. In particular, procedural macros, in which the definition of the macro is portrayed through the extended programming language itself, are extremely powerful and actually adopted in Rust, Scala, and other programming languages. While imbued with such power, however, procedural macros are also prone to the generation of troublesome bugs, and on that point contain certain black magic-like aspects. The goal of my research is to use the type system approach to prevent procedural macros from generating bugs, and utilize the existing power as-is while ensuring security. In particular, based upon the understanding that type systems are integrally linked to the logical system of modal logic, I am attempting to build a refined theoretical model through an approach rooted in the perspective of logic.

With the use of macros facilitating introduction of a domain-specific language (DSL) in programming languages, this can be widely utilized in software development when building platforms. Conceivable specific examples include a use case where codes for data exchange with databases are abstracted with the use of macros. I envision what is actually necessary for that type of application and feed that back to theory design.

Enabling Recognition of Subtle Facial Expression Transition along Positive-Negative Direction

Proposed Platform

I am working to develop a reliable, practical, and efficient internal state recognition system by exploring ranking algorithms that offer more detailed internal state strength. My desire is to then use such a platform to furnish support for people’s lives, work, health, and other aspects.

Research Focus

The theme focuses on developing techniques to capture subtle changes in facial expressions, specifically transitioning from positive to negative emotions. From the perspective of platform studies, the analysis of user emotions and reactions on social media or online platforms is considered. Detecting minute facial expression changes in photos and videos posted by users can help understand emotional trends, enhancing communication and information sharing on the platform.

As for related sub-disciplines, psychology and cognitive science come into play. Understanding subtle changes in emotions requires knowledge of psychology, delving into the physiological aspects such as facial muscle movements and eye movements and studying their correlation with emotions. Simultaneously, utilizing cognitive science methodologies to elucidate the relationship between brain activity and subtle facial expression changes is crucial.

The success of this research could improve the quality of communication on platforms, enriching the user experience. Accurately capturing subtle changes in emotions has the potential to facilitate deeper communication and understanding on social media and online platforms.

Analysis of Flood Inundation Risk to Realize River Basin Flood Control under Climate Change

Proposed Platform

The need for disaster risk information is not limited to the realm of disaster prevention facilities and public facilities. Such data is also crucial in the selection of residential sites, disaster preparedness for such residences, and other forthcoming designs to ensure they are capable of coping with an uncertain future. By realizing the supply of risk information for various locations as a disaster risk information platform, it will become possible to make assessments of the merits and demerits in drawing up future plans, and thereby contribute to sustainable social development positioned to avoid loss of life and other catastrophic damage.

Research Focus

It is projected that the impact of climate change will lead to increases in sudden downpours and other short-term rainfall concentrations. That will likely result in not only flooding on major rivers, but also inundation of roadside waterways and other small- to medium-scale streams destined to increase the impact on society. In moving to uphold our future lifestyles, it will be difficult to mount potent responses through initiatives limited only to streams. To effectively proceed in that direction, the cooperation of all people involved with rivers is shaping up as indispensable. Against this backdrop, policies are being advanced in the quest for reliable river basin flood control. To truly enlist the backing of all concerned parties, however, it will be vital to analyze the risks capable of undermining the interests of these parties. In this research, the objective is to formulate methods for analysis of the integrated risks in basins spanning rivers of various scales, thereby contributing to the supply of information capable of furnishing a solid foundation for discussions of the building of a truly sustainable society.

Development of a Novel Method of Microbial Detection Using Dielectric Sensors that Measure Water Dynamics

Proposed Platform

We are pursuing the development of a rapid microbial detection technology that uses an original sensor developed in collaboration with a private company to exploit the dielectric response of water. This technology has the potential to speed up microbial testing, which is important to microbial control. I am interested in developing a novel microbial detection platform that harnesses this system.

Research Focus

We are engaged in research that focuses on certain properties of water to assess the proliferative capacity of microbes. As an experimental device, we are using an original dielectric sensor our laboratory developed in collaboration with a private company. We know that the dielectric properties of this device, within the frequency band that it operates, are sensitive to bulk water that is not bonded to any biomolecules. The proliferation of microbes in a water sample can cause changes to the water, such as the utilization of the bulk water in the sample or the hydration of biomolecules; this sensor appears to be able to detect consequent changes in the dynamics of the sample's water molecules. Assessing the proliferative capacity of microbes with this sensor is faster than with traditional culturing methods. Additionally, because the equipment itself is simple to operate and inexpensive, we anticipate it will evolve as a technology with broad applications spanning the food and medical fields. We plan to study communications technologies and examples of social implementation within the field of platform science in the hope that we can develop real applications for this detection technology.

Environmental Factors and the Physiological Molecular Basis Regulating Clownfish Hatching

Proposed Platform

My research is focused on the rapid breeding of cultured fish using the latest biotechnology. Accordingly, I aim to establish a platform that will serve as a foundation for genetic modification and genetic function analysis technologies applicable to a wide range of fish species.

Research Focus

It is known that the timing of hatching is an essential factor in the initial fitness of fish, such as predation rate and feeding, and is affected by environmental factors (e.g., tides and day/night). However, there is limited understanding of the molecular basis for regulating hatching behavior through these environmental factors. Clownfish are reef-dwelling fish with an incubation strategy in which they hatch en masse at night. During hatching, it has been observed that the parent fish frequently send water currents to the eggs with their caudal fins to stimulate hatching. From these observations, it is predicted that external factors such as dark conditions and physical stimulation by water currents strictly regulate clownfish hatching. This research aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms at work in clownfish eggs leading to hatching by sensing light shading and physical stimuli. In order to carry out this research, I have also been working on developing a technology platform for applying genetic manipulation technology on clownfish, successfully performing genome editing, and introducing exogenous genes in clownfish (Yamanaka et al., 2021).

Research on Assessment of Impact of Anthropogenic Sound on Small Cetaceans

Proposed Platform

My research aims to build a platform to promote the solution of marine noise issues. By utilizing machine learning models to detect the sound of vessels, which are the noise source, and the sound of small cetaceans, which are affected by the noise, this research aims to construct a system to evaluate how the noise affects the calls and distribution of these creatures.

Research Focus

In recent years, anthropogenic noise has become a growing concern, affecting marine life. This issue is called the marine noise pollution problem. Among the marine organisms affected, small cetaceans are said to be particularly vulnerable. This is because small cetaceans use sound to communicate and recognize their surroundings, thus relying heavily on sound. The impact of anthropogenic sound on small cetaceans varies, ranging from alteration in calling, behavior, and distribution. To evaluate the effects of anthropogenic sounds on small cetaceans, I am using a technique called passive acoustic monitoring, where underwater microphones are set to continuously observe the sounds of small cetaceans and vessel noise, an anthropogenic sound. Moreover, as the acoustic data obtained is extensive and time-consuming to analyze, machine learning and deep learning methods are used to construct a model that can detect the sounds of cetaceans and vessels. This research aims to create a technology that can evaluate the impact of such anthropogenic sounds on marine organisms and a platform that can share the obtained impact evaluation results; in other words, a platform that will facilitate the solution of marine noise pollution problems.

Generated a consensus genetic map by genotyping the wheat NAM population and used it to perform genetic analysis of the population to reconstruct the recombination landscape of the wheat NAM population at a fine scale.

Proposed Platform

A consensus genetic map of the NBPR wheat NAM population was constructed, providing the basis and platform for subsequent genetic analysis. Using this NAM population as the source material, the distribution of recombination sites on the wheat genome was examined and genetically analyzed. The results can potentially help breeders evaluate chromosomal exchanges in wheat.

Research Focus

This study focuses on genotyping and creating a high-density consensus genetic map of a NAM (Nested Association Mapping) population of wheat. From a platform science perspective, an essential part of this process is developing and applying a bioinformatics workflow to process and analyze large amounts of genetic data efficiently.

This workflow increases computational efficiency and conserves time by keeping a representative marker in each recombination bin and following the physical order of the reference genome of shared parental lineage. This allows consensus maps for specific NAM populations to be created without aligning markers to public consensus maps constructed by other populations. Such data processing and analysis efficiency is a core component of the Platform studies.

Moreover, the constructed consensus map showed better QTL detection ability than the single genetic map when performing QTL analysis based on the heading time (HT) and flowering time (FT) traits. These results demonstrate the importance of advanced data analysis platforms, which can potentially be a powerful tool in wheat genome research to accelerate the development of new varieties.

Additionally, a sliding window approach was adopted in the process of using the Asian wheat NAM population to investigate the recombination landscape of the whole genome and detect QTLs controlling the number of crossovers (CO). This approach is an example of a platform technology for efficiently analyzing large genetic data sets.

This research demonstrates how advances in bioinformatics and data science can facilitate new discoveries and applications in the field of plant genetics. From a platform studies perspective, it highlights how the development and application of these technologies are essential to increasing the efficiency and accuracy of the research.

Transfer of Radioactive Cesium in the Food Webs of Forest and River Ecosystems in Fukushima

Proposed Platform

While investigation of the environmental dynamics of radioactive cesium is a field characterized by a high level of interest on the part of local residents, there are few cases in which data on radioactive cesium concentrations other than those on marine and forest products is disclosed to the general public. Taking this into consideration, my goal is to construct a platform capable of organizing the various data on radioactive cesium concentrations obtained through a wide range of initiatives, free of scattering or loss, for use in resolving social issues.

Research Focus

Upon the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant that occurred in March 2011, large volumes of artificial radioactive materials were scattered in areas around Fukushima Prefecture. Radioactive cesium 137 (Cs-137), one of the major nuclides released at that time, is known for its long physical half-life (namely, the time required for abundance to decline to one-half due to radioactive decay) of approximately 30 years, and continues to be a critical monitoring target to this day.

In fields located within Fukushima Prefecture, I am working in a comprehensive effort to gather wildlife inhabiting there and other environmental samples. The idea is to advance research with the purpose of utilizing these observations to indicate the volumes and routes of Cs-137 transferred and scattered through food webs in the local ecosystems. My ultimate objective is to achieve verification of the causes of Cs-137 concentration characteristics present in the various biological species, leading to application of such findings in assessment of radioecology risks.

Investigation of the dynamics of artificial radioactive materials is an interdisciplinary study field that, in addition to my major area of pursuit, also spans agriculture, medicine, disaster prevention, sociology, and other sectors. In Fukushima as well, experts from various different academic fields are advancing research in this area. In my estimate, we require the ability to construct IT-based platforms geared to utilize the diversified range of data obtained through this process, free of scattering or loss, for use in the quest to resolve issues faced by society.

Phylogeography of Ardisia Crenata that Reproduces by Apomixis

Proposed Platform

By adopting ardisia crenata, a popular horticultural product, as a model plant, this research aims to create a data environment that will make horticultural varieties of plants more accessible as research subjects and for commercial use.

Research Focus

Ardisia crenata, a plant native to Japan and a popular horticultural choice, is raging as an invasive non-native species in the U.S. and Hawaii. Genome sequencing analysis has revealed that the Florida invasive population in the U.S. is a giant clonal population that reproduces by apomixis. These are known to be derived from introduced horticultural varieties, which are trait-diverse. If this horticultural variety originates from a genetically identical population, a few genomic variants could explain the variation, offering potential model organisms or a genomic research platform. Hence, this research aims to determine the genetic structure of horticultural products from phylogeography and population genetics.

Tree Species Specificity and Bark Morphology Specificity of Corticolous Lichens

Proposed Platform

I would like to build an integrated platform for tree-by-tree survey data, from input to analysis. To be widely used for data on lichens and other minor organisms.

Research Focus

Lichens are fungi living in a stable symbiotic state with algae and are very slow-growing. Inherently, for such organisms that have difficulty changing their own habitat, the stability of the habitat is an essential factor in their survival. On the other hand, corticolous lichens utilize bark that sheds irregularly.

I believe that the diversity of habitats provided by the characteristics of bark creates the diversity of species and morphology of corticolous lichens. To this end, using the long-term forest science field data from tree-by-tree surveys (tree species, tree size, and tree height measured at intervals of several years), my research focuses on whether there is a relationship between tree species and bark morphology and lichen attachment.

Currently, tree and lichen data are often recorded by hand in a field notebook. Furthermore, data is rarely shared with researchers in other fields. In order to streamline this process and advance the forest science field through interdisciplinary collaboration, I hope to establish an integrated "field notebook platform" covering all processes from input to analysis in the future.

Development of a Low-Cost, Fast, and Simple Technology for Microbial Manipulation and Testing Using a Sensor Comprising a Dielectrophoresis-Assisted Oscillator Array

Development of a platform for the control and measurement of microbes through electric methods using the dielectric properties of microbes

Research Focus

Most microbial detection modalities in food processing facilities, clinical settings, etc., rely on agar culturing methods. However, because of the relatively lengthy culturing periods involved, this approach cannot accommodate the quick response required in cases of food poisoning, contamination, or infection. Our research is aimed at developing a low-cost, fast, and simple biosensing technology for microbial manipulation and evaluation that harnesses a novel dielectrophoresis-assisted oscillator array that we have developed. Dielectrophoresis technology integrating a microcircuit will be used to manipulate microbial cells based on their dielectric properties, and oscillator technology will be used to measure those properties. Compared to currently often used methods that rely on spectroscopy or polymerase chain reaction, this new method will cost less, and have the ability to measure individual cells at the microscopic level. Harnessing these strengths, it will be suited for practical use in the areas of food inspection, utilization of microbes, and microbial evaluation, with applications ranging from agriculture and medicine to biological research. Given the importance assigned to this research as a demonstration of the practical functionality of dielectric sensor technology, it can be expected to pave the way for the interdisciplinary sharing of data on cellular dielectric properties, and, on that basis, the development of platforms for microbial manipulation and evaluation.

Imaging platform to diagnose mental disorders using functional MRI data

Research Focus

Upon formulating inferences of unknown environments, we obtain clues from sensory information transmitted from sensory organs, as well as knowledge, experience, and other prior information. With these two information groups inevitably accompanied by uncertainties, human beings are thought to take the received information uncertainties into account in combining the two information groups, then postulating inferences of the environment at hand. Notwithstanding, it remains unclear how the brain expresses the uncertainties of sensory information and prior information. To investigate the neural expression of the two types of uncertainty, I have used the image conversion method based on deep learning to prepare image sets in which the phases of naturalness differ. Experiment participants were shown images in the sequence of the progressive transformation of natural images into unnatural images, as well as the sequence of changes in the opposite direction. Measurements were taken of their brain activity at that time, followed by investigations of the linkage between the two types of uncertainties and brain activity. Based on the consideration that cases in which it proves impossible to appropriately link sensory information and prior information may also lead to hallucinations and other mental disorders, there are hopes for the application of this research in the medical field as well.

I am working to develop new measurement techniques in order to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for information processing in the brain. While the brain is extremely complex and intricately structured, it is also supple and flexible, allowing it to adapt to a variety of situations. For this reason, in order to analyze the brain’s information-processing mechanisms, it is crucial to measure neural information from the brains of animals during the course of activity. In recent years, a number of fluorescent protein probes that display the state and properties of neurons have been developed. For example, the information being transmitted by the target cells can be analyzed by using calcium imaging or membrane potential imaging to measure neural activity. It is also becoming possible to measure the state of cells (the activity of enzymes that regulate neural activity) and their metabolism (measurement of adenosine triphosphate and mitochondrial function) through fluorescent imaging. Combining these probes with genetically engineered mice enables measurements to be conducted in a cell-type selective manner.

I am currently working to develop a new sensor using molecular biological techniques and a microscope for performing measurements from the brains of active mice. Through these new technologies, I aim to observe phenomena that could not previously be analyzed, and to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms by which the brain processes information.

I am conducting research to elucidate the self-incompatibility mechanism in fruit trees that belong to the genus Prunus in the family Rosaceae (e.g., ume plums, Japanese sumomo plums, almonds, and cherries) and the mechanisms for sex determination in fruit trees that exhibit dioecism (e.g., persimmons and kiwifruit), with the objective of helping improve the efficiency of fruit tree production. In addition, I have recently been developing a new method for evaluating fruit quality utilizing image analysis and artificial intelligence. I am also working on fruit tree breeding through genetic modification, genome editing, and genomic methods. In this manner, I am involved in research spanning a wide range of areas related to the production of fruit trees. I am also focused on international exchange and international joint research, and through the laboratory’s research projects I strive to foster students capable of playing an active role on the international stage.

My main field of research is fluid dynamics, particularly fluid dynamics in extremely small-scale environments. When investigating the behavior of fluids in small-scale environments, a macroscopic approach, as typified by solving Navier-Stokes equations, is insufficient by itself. Instead, an analysis needs to be conducted taking into account the fact that the fluid is a collection of many particles. I am investigating fluid movement from this perspective—as the statistical and collective behavior of a multitude of particles. More specifically, I am studying the forces exerted on objects, thermophoresis, the application of flow caused by temperature fields to microfluids, and other topics, taking micro- and nano-scale fluidic phenomena into consideration. The device I am holding in the picture on the left is a Crookes radiometer. I have been intrigued by this fascinating device ever since I first encountered it as a student, and hope one day to construct its fluid dynamics.

Since my time in graduate school, my research has consistently focused on speech recognition and spoken dialogue systems. Around 2000, I developed Julius, an open-source speech recognition platform (likely the first of its kind in the world) that was widely used both in Japan and internationally. However, this technology has since been replaced by cloud-based services and deep learning-based systems. I am currently focusing my research on platform systems for spoken dialogue with humanoid robots and virtual agents. Specifically, I am engaged in the research and development of android ERICA, which can engage in extended and in-depth dialogue in the same way as a human, and semi-autonomous dialogue systems that combine remote human dialogue and autonomous robot dialogue.

Utilizing a foundation of clinical neurology, clinical epileptology, and clinical electroencephalography, my research team was the first to report the involvement of glia in epileptic pathology as slow oscillations (active direct current [DC] shifts) immediately prior to the onset of epileptic seizures from the perspective of wide-band electroencephalography (EEG) (Ikeda et al. 1997; Imamura et al. 2011; Kanazawa et al. 2015), and demonstrated it through neuropathology and basic experiments. Moreover, through collaborative research on mathematical models, we were the first to report the operational principles between glia and neurons, and identify the co-occurrence of slow and high-frequency oscillations linking transitions from interictal to ictal states as a candidate biomarker for epileptogenicity, or “red slow” (Inoue et al. 2019). We have also elucidated the central control mechanisms in higher brain functions through slow shift EEG activity. I have been active in numerous collaborative research projects both in Japan and internationally and have played a leadership role in clinical and research efforts in this field, such as by serving as President of the Japan Epilepsy Society from 2017 to 2021.

My research primarily focuses on the physical layer (wireless communications methods and digital signal processing) of next-generation communications systems, exemplified by the sixth-generation mobile communications system (6G). For example, I am studying ways to improve the usage efficiency of dwindling wireless resources (radio spectrum) through more efficient sharing between different types of systems; technologies for realizing full-duplex communications where transmission and reception are simultaneously performed at the same frequency; and methods for estimating the location of mobile terminals based on various types of information obtained through analysis of radio waves (radio wave big data) combined with machine learning. My evaluation of the proposed systems includes not only theoretical and computational evaluations, but also verification tests with software-defined radio and other devices using actual radio waves.

My field of specialization is environmental economics. In particular, my research focuses on evaluating the economic value of the environment. For example, forests have a variety of roles, including lumber production, water source preservation, disaster prevention, tourism applications, and conservation of wild flora and fauna. However, of these roles, the only function for which prices exist is lumber production. Accordingly, although emphasis is placed on lumber production, the role of forests in environmental preservation tends to be undervalued. I am therefore researching how forest conservation policies can be adapted to meet societal needs by evaluating the economic value of the role of forests in environmental conservation. I am also using machine learning and deep learning for analysis to assess the value of the scenic landscape, as well as conducting big data analysis, such as analyzing hiker behavior based on mobile phone signal data.

I am conducting research on financial technology (FinTech), crypto-assets, and digital currencies, as well as the information security technologies employed in these fields. I have studied electronic cash and electronic payment systems for over 20 years starting from my time at the Bank of Japan, where I served as the first Head of the Bank’s FinTech Center before assuming my current position in 2017. My research focuses on transforming Japanese financial services through cashless payments and new types of financial transactions. Concurrently, I serve as a councilor of Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) and as a member of the FSA’s Financial System Council, where I work to apply the findings from my research in order to update Japan’s financial system and financial regulations. In addition to working toward a digital transformation (DX) in financial services, I have also been involved in initiatives to promote DX in government for many years, and am assisting in the Japanese government’s ongoing efforts to digitalize government functions.

My research focuses on mathematical optimization, in particular the theory and application of large-scale continuous optimization problems. Many of the challenges facing society can be viewed as optimization problems, where the optimal solution for a certain objective can be found among alternatives that satisfy several conditions. For example, carbon neutrality is an optimization problem that involves finding ways to minimize carbon dioxide emissions while maintaining as many societal conveniences as possible. Among mathematical optimization problems in which the conditions and objectives can be expressed as mathematical formulas, I am particularly interested in developing theories and algorithms for continuous optimization problems that involve large-scale continuous variables. Although this technology does not feature at the forefront of the platform, it plays an important supporting role behind the scenes.

Approximately 70% of Japan’s land area is mountainous, and tragic disasters caused by slope failures and mudslides occur somewhere in the country every year. It is therefore vital to predict such landslides and mitigate the damage they cause. Additionally, while forests, which envelop the majority of Japan’s mountainous areas, are believed to function as “green dams” and contribute to water utilization and flood control, this phenomenon has not yet been scientifically proven. My research combines field observations, laboratory experiments, numerical simulation, and other means to elucidate the state of sediment and water movement in mountainous areas in order to contribute to the development of a safer and more comfortable society.

I am conducting research with the aim of elucidating the underlying mechanisms behind brain network alterations and higher brain functions under physiological and pathological conditions, such as sleep and epilepsy in humans. Specifically, with the consent of intractable focal epilepsy patients who had intracranial electrodes implanted for evaluation before the surgical resection of the epileptic focus, I administered single-shot electrical stimulation to the brain cortex under waking and sleeping conditions and investigated the resulting changes in electrical activity as a measure of network alteration. I have also studied brain network analysis, including deep nuclei, in epilepsy patients using simultaneous recording of scalp electroencephalogram and functional MRI, as well as the transmission of intracranial information during visual tasks. The hydrosphere includes the oceanic area, coastal areas, deep sea, lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams as well as extreme environments such as deep-sea hydrothermal deposits and hot springs. Although microbes (bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotic microbes) are invisible to the human eye, as the unseen majority in the aquatic environment they are remarkably diverse and constitute the foundation of the biosphere that is formed there. The viruses that infect these microbes are even more abundant by an order of magnitude and exert a significant impact on lower ecosystems through infection and lysis.

We are applying microbiological, molecular biological, genomic, and biochemical methodologies to analyze the strategies that these aquatic microbes employ to survive in their respective environments, and how their interactions with viruses and phages influence the evolution of their genomes.

From my student days, I have specialized in process systems engineering, a branch of chemical engineering, where I have focused on the research, development, and industrial application of virtual measurement (soft sensors), process monitoring, and process control in order to solve challenges on the manufacturing floor by fully utilizing manufacturing data. Since joining the Graduate School of Informatics in 2012, I have been working on medical data analysis as well, based on the philosophy that as manufacturing facilities and humans face the same challenges, it should be possible to solve these issues in an integrated manner. I am also undertaking an ambitious project to develop an artificial intelligence system that automatically constructs first-principle models (physical models) based on literature sources.

The warm color of wood, its infinite grain patterns, and its mellow luster—the positive effects of these unique visual characteristics of wood on the physical and mental well-being of the beholder have long been noted, and we all sense this phenomena, whether consciously or unconsciously. However, these remarkable properties that wood possesses have not been quantitatively evaluated in the same manner as its mechanical and other properties. In view of that, I have worked to develop an image analysis method to quantitatively describe the visual characteristics of wood, and verify the correlation between the image features obtained and human visual perception (e.g., the impression when viewing the wood surface). Recently, I am also investigating the effects of wood surfaces on tactile perception (touch). In addition, I am currently exploring the effect of wood on human physiological response by combining measurements such as electroencephalogram, heart rate variability, and pupillary response.

Biodiversity provides multifaceted value including contributing to ecosystem function, bioresources, and cultural significance, which enrich our lives both materially and spiritually. However, this biodiversity is increasingly deteriorating in a variety of ecosystems due to human influence. Forests sustain the largest biomass among terrestrial ecosystems, and their complex structure provides a habitat and nurturing environment for a diverse range of organisms. We are conducting research aimed at understanding, conserving, and utilizing biodiversity in ecosystems based on genomic information, using molecular ecology and conservation genomics methods, in combination with fieldwork during which we visit a variety of ecosystems to ascertain the status of biodiversity.

For wireless data communications, while radio waves are used in the air, ultrasonic waves are used in underwater environments due to the high attenuation of radio waves. I employ a data communications method that utilizes ultrasonic waves as the core technology for my research. In this method, a miniature ultrasonic transmitter is attached to the organism being studied, and the emitted signal is logged by a receiver to obtain information such as the identifier, pressure, and temperature encoded in the signal. Furthermore, the difference in signal arrival time to three or more stationary receivers can be used to estimate the position of the acoustic source. Having made this positional estimation method extremely precise (horizontal positional accuracy of approximately 0.1 meters) in a field environment, I am currently applying this technology to biological and fisheries research. Specifically, I am devoting my efforts to studying the schooling behavior of black rockfish, butterflyfish, bluefin tuna, and Adelie penguins, as well as the migratory behavior of Japanese eels, spotted halibut, and channel catfish.

My research focuses on computer-based data analysis technology. In particular, I specialize in machine learning, a field of artificial intelligence that aims to develop computer programs capable of learning from experience. I am exploring methods to enable machine learning to perform more successfully and efficiently when handling complex data that it has traditionally been unable to process effectively, as well as new types of data, in order to enable machine learning to play a greater role in a wider range of real-world situations. I am also working to apply machine learning to solve a range of challenges faced in the scientific and business arenas. Recently, I have been focusing on the concept of human computation, in which humans and artificial intelligence cooperate to find solutions to difficult problems that could not be solved by either party alone.

My research interests include modeling how computers understand language and elucidating how humans understand language. Based on this knowledge, I am also working to construct a language processing system that can support human intellectual activity and communication. Although deep learning has enabled rapid progress in natural language processing, reconstructing omitted subjects in Japanese sentences, for example, still presents a significant challenge. While machine translation and dialogue systems are achieving increasing levels of accuracy, creating systems that can explain behavior based on meaning remains a challenging task for the future.

My research focuses on a variety of topics where medicine and information converge, the prime examples being the development of electronic textile (e-textile) devices and the introduction of the Internet of Things (IoT) into the medical field and everyday living environment. Harnessing these key technologies, I have been consistently working to create the type of future predicted since past eras by improving the efficiency of data collection, making predictions based on objective data, and providing timely and appropriate interventions. I continue working to piece together what data tells us about the reality of today’s medical field and, based on this, to contemplate and envision what the medical system of the future should look like. As I advance my research from a holistic perspective, from the start to finish, I am in turn frustrated and excited by the task of constructing the key societal platform that is medical care.

I am conducting research on programming languages with a particular focus on program verification—a process aimed at detecting errors in a written program before the program is executed—as well as abstraction mechanisms to minimize (prevent) errors from occurring in the program from the outset, by utilizing theories such as typed lambda calculus. In fields related to platform studies, I am studying the automated verification of smart contracts—programs that automate payments and other transactions on the blockchain. Given that bugs in smart contracts can cause serious financial damage, and that smart contracts can generally not be deleted once they are initiated, it is critical that their correctness is verified before their execution. In our laboratory, we are currently developing an automated verification software called Helmholtz for use with the Tezos blockchain.

As irrigation and drainage for agriculture have a significant impact on the local environment, I am exploring ways to manage water in agricultural and rural areas in order to create a healthy local environment. For example, I am working to propose water and substance management methods to solve water-related problems such as the perceived scarcity of agricultural water, declining groundwater levels, and frequent flooding, along with substance-related problems such as soil and groundwater contamination by heavy metals and nitrate-nitrogen, eutrophication in lakes and ponds, and greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural land. In addition to providing scientific and engineering descriptions of the dynamic mechanisms of water and substances at an individual field, community, and watershed level, I aim to construct a viable water management platform that is more conscious of climate change responsiveness while also addressing the changing circumstances surrounding water management (e.g., aging population, farmland concentration in the hands of active farmers, smart agriculture, and improvement of crop quality).

As a child I loved fishing, and would often visit local rivers, ponds, and lakes. Although I was able to encounter fish from spring, when the water temperature began to rise, through to fall, when the colors of the mountains began to change, I unfortunately had no luck when the cold winds of winter began to blow. I wanted to encounter fish all the time, and know where they were and when, as well as what they were doing. Following this childhood passion, I currently devote my research efforts to (1) developing an ultrasonic biotelemetry system that can determine the location of fish, and (2) using this new technology to conduct ecological and behavioral research aimed at managing and maintaining aquatic wildlife levels and conserving endangered species. Specifically, in Japan I am focusing on studying the migration and homing behaviors of black rockfish, red-spotted grouper, Japanese eels, spotted halibut, and other fishes as well as the schooling behavior of highly migratory fishes such as bluefin tuna. Outside Japan, over a period of approximately 20 years I have been conducting ecological research on the Mekong giant catfish, an endangered species measuring up to three meters in length that is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish, at the request of the Thai Department of Fisheries.

In their day-to-day lives, people instantaneously and subconsciously distinguish between objects that require attention and those that do not, within their immediate surroundings. Although these brain functions related to attention are essential to human life, the mechanisms by which they operate have not yet been elucidated. The primary objective of my research is to identify the mechanisms responsible for this type of attention. Specifically, my research involves observing animal and human behavior while recording their brain activity, and using this data to develop brain simulations. If the behavior and brain simulation activity of a robot can be used to replicate the behavior and brain activity of an animal, we can infer that we have understood the mechanisms behind the phenomenon. Simulation technology also makes it possible to conduct experiments that would be physically impossible on a real object.

I am working to identify health challenges and design actions to solve them (intervention design) in the broad fields of medical care, preventive medicine, and nursing care by analyzing large-scale health data collected from municipalities, health insurance associations, and other organizations. Through a learning health system, a mechanism to support health by learning from data and making continuous improvements, I am working to support people’s health, both today and in the future. As part of data analysis, I conduct real-world evaluations of interventions using a combination of experimental and quasi-experimental designs to analyze and interpret large-scale and complex health data in a coherent manner. My specific research topics include enhancing the quality of medical care, improving patients’ healthcare-seeking behavior, refining the design of systems aimed at preventing lifestyle diseases, and preventing functional decline among senior citizens. I am also working to link data obtained through the Internet of Things and other information communications technologies in daily life with health data, as well as to design healthy behaviors in everyday life.

Animals are believed to act in a purposive manner in order to survive. Purposive actions can be described as behaviors performed to receive rewards such as nutrition, or avoid unpleasant situations. We are using small rodents (mice) to investigate the brain mechanisms necessary for learning purposive actions. Specifically, through multiple simultaneous recordings of neural activity, we aim to investigate the presence of cell populations associated with behaviors and stimuli, create neural circuit models, and elucidate their operating principles. During this process, optogenetics technology makes it possible to stimulate or inhibit the activity of a specific neuronal population at a time resolution of one second or less. We are currently testing hypotheses related to neural circuit models and their role in behavior, given evidence that artificially altering neural activity also alters the activity of neural populations and, by extension, the behavior of mice.
