Epidemiological studies that utilize healthcare databases have increased in number in recent years. This is also true in Japan, where an increasing number of studies are utilizing health insurance claims data and diagnosis procedure combination (DPC) data. In particular, DPC data includes not only information related to health insurance claims, but also that used for the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW)’s survey of discharged patients, and thus can be utilized for a variety of purposes including research and monitoring. Additionally, the MHLW has established the National Database of Health Insurance Claims and Specific Health Checkups of Japan (NDB) that stores the electronic health insurance claims of all citizens from fiscal 2009 onward, and makes this data available to researchers.

Utilizing such healthcare databases (DPC, NDB, and health insurance claims data owned by local governments), I am conducting research on the development, analysis, and monitoring of healthcare quality indicators; disparities in the quality of healthcare between hospitals and regions; disease prevention; and foundations for database studies.
