Kyoto University School of Platforms

Creating and implementing a new methodology of efficiently analyzing information from the real world and feeding it back into social spaces, encompassing original character and social values in Japan, a ʻplatform,ʼ is the key to solving various problems in modern society. Building such Platforms requires persons who can share their expertise in their fields, information technology, knowledge of liberal arts, etc. People having such competence are nowadays widely demanded by society.

Course Information (Kyoto University internal access only)

Outlooks on Platform Science [Second Semester 2023, Tuesday 5th Period (mainly designed for first-year Master’s students)]
Overview and Aims: This course deals with “platforms” that use information and communications technology (ICT) to digitize various forms of information throughout society, to gather such data widely, to accumulate it as big data, and to organize, analyze and share this big data. Students are introduced to cutting-edge topics in this area by professors of the Graduate School of Informatics, faculty in charge of the Distinguished Doctoral Program of Platforms, and speakers from outside the university.

Eligibility Applicants must have enrolled in a Master’s program in one of the following departments/divisions in April 2024:

Graduate School of Informatics: Department of Informatics
Graduate School of Agriculture: Division of Agronomy and Horticultural Science, Division of Forest and Biomaterials Science, Division of Applied Biosciences, Division of Environmental Science and Technology, Division of Natural Resource Economics
Number of Students Admitted 12
Schedule Application period: Friday, April 5 to Monday, April 15 Tuesday, April 16 2024 (applications must be lodged by 1:00 pm on the final day of this period)
Announcement of final admission decisions: To be posted on the School of Platforms website in late May
